Our Debian packages are stuctured quite similar to our RPM packages.
They differ from the original Debian Samba packages, because we do not use
the FHS patches to unify setups and to keep things simple.
Feature items:
- Prefix "sernet-", to make you sure the packages are not touched by the original Debian Samba packages if you do a "apt-get upgrade". You can also automatically keep yourself up-to-date if you add
deb http://ftp.sernet.de/pub/samba/3.4/debian etch main
to your list of apt source servers for Samba 3.4 packages, deb http://ftp.sernet.de/pub/samba/3.3/debian etch main
for Samba 3.3 packages.
- We additionally split the cifs mount helper out of the smbfs package into sernet-cifs-mount to enable you to install it without the deprecated smbmount which brings a lot of additional dependencies, while cifs-mount just depends on your libc.
- Support for NTLM authentication also in Active Directory domains if security = domain ist used instead of security = ads.
- Patches which we consider to be too experimental for production machines are being removed while other patches for problems that we encountered are being added.
